Special Prayer for Mothers

A Special Prayer For Mothers

Sister Pauline Garvey, our Women’s Fellowship President, offers A Special Prayer for Mothers.

My Brothers, Sisters and Friends,

We give God thanks for His favour and mercy. Today many in the world celebrate mothers. As you are aware, some mothers have the support of a spouse but others may not. Some mothers struggle alone or enlist the help of extended family members such as grandmothers. Yet many of our mothers have been making a purposeful effort to ensure that their children and grandchildren become valuable contributors to society.

The Apostle Paul was a spiritual father to Timothy, but he acknowledged the influence of a grandmother and mother’s faith when he said:

“I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also.”

2 Timothy 1:5 NIV

The life of Timothy encourages us to appreciate the fact that regardless of our family’s circumstances, putting our trust in God will make that difference in our lives, and the lives of our families.

Today we are doing a special prayer for mothers. This prayer is led by our Women’s Fellowship President, Sister Pauline Garvey. Sister Pauline and her husband, Brother Mark, are business owners. Brother Mark is also a member of GMC. Sister Pauline is a mother of two daughters and two sons; and a grandmother of three grandchildren.

Let us look to the Lord in prayer:

Heavenly Father, we come in the name of Jesus Christ, thanking You for Your hand of mercy and grace. Lord we ask that You cleanse us from all unrighteousness and forgive all of our sins.

Lord, as we specially celebrate mothers today, we thank You for mothers, whom You have created and blessed with gifts and talents for the nurturing and upbringing of their loved ones. Proverbs 1:8 says, “Listen my son, to your father’s instructions and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.” Your word Lord, encourages our children to recognize and pay attention to the guidance and advice of their mothers.

Lord, we thank You for the gift of time mothers give to their children, whether it is stay-at-home mothers, working mothers, or mothers who do both. Lord, as we think of mothers from our GMC congregation, Jamaica as a whole, and the world at large, we thank You that each mother is Your steward, a custodian of her children. We thank You for those whose eyes have been opened to the greatness of Your power. We pray that mothers will not waiver in raising their children in the fear and admonition of You, Lord. As mothers, help us to live in surrender to Your plans and purposes for our lives, and the lives of our families. We pray that each mother makes it a priority to read the word of God and use it as a guide for her daily life and that of her family. This is what pleases You, Lord.

Dear God, Mother’s Day can bring a mix of emotions for many mothers and mothers to be.  Lord, bless the expectant mother and help her to deal with the fears and anxieties she may have about the time ahead. Please guard her health and her baby, and give her the peace of mind that seems so difficult to achieve at this time. Give the medical personnel the wisdom and compassion to deal with these mothers to be. Help these mothers to be prepared for the joys and challenges of parenthood.

Lord, there are mothers who have lost their mothers and are grieving on Mother’s Day. We pray that You will grant them the comfort and peace that can only come from You. At the same time, we thank You for mothers who have gone to be with the Lord, and whose lives have positively impacted many families. We thank You for mothers whose faith can bring comfort to others in times of sorrow and need.

Dear God, we pray for mothers who encounter feelings of hurt because their children have turned from the Lord, and those who are overwhelmed with pain from the loss of a child. Lord, pour out Your love into their hearts and heal the wounds they carry inside. Lord, help them to come to the realization and understanding that Your grace is sufficient. You have promised to never leave nor forsake them.

In the midst of our grief and pain, Lord, let us feel Your presence, knowing that You have not left us to take care of ourselves. Forgive us for doubting who You are and what You can do. Forgive us for thinking You have forgotten us. Forgive us for believing we know the better way, for You are the way, the truth, and the life. You are all-powerful, the Lord over every situation no matter how difficult it may seem to us. You are our Healer and You understand the grief and pain we carry sometimes. Nothing is impossible for You Lord; absolutely nothing is too difficult for You.

We thank You Lord for healing, and forgiveness.

Lord, we pray for women who never had the honour of bearing children, but have physically and spiritually invested in the lives of children. We thank You for them and ask that You continue to replenish their baskets and refresh their lives. Lord, help them to be assured that they are making valuable contributions to the lives of many persons.

Lord, we place before You single mothers who often carry the weight of their families on their shoulders. God, give strength to single mothers who try to maintain a loving home without the help of an earthly father. We thank You that You alone are our provider. Help each mother to know that although they are parenting alone, You are in the midst to bless. They can lean on You for the fathering of their children. We also ask that You send for them spiritual fathers for those children without an effective godly father.

Lord, help us when we doubt that You hear, and answer our prayers.

Lord Jesus, there are many mothers who live in fear as a result of abusive relationships. Help them Father, to recognize that abuse can take place in many forms, not just physical, but mental, verbal and emotional. Enlighten them and provide them with wisdom to see when things are not right within their relationships. Help mothers who are being abused to stand up and declare that no weapon formed against them shall prosper for they can be delivered by the power of Jesus. Lord, help those mothers who are in abusive relationship to develop their strength in God and reject being abused. Heal and help them to walk in freedom and to feel Your presence strengthening them as they take a stand for God. At the same time, Lord, we pray for their safety. Cover and protect their children, as children are a heritage from You Lord and precious in Your sight.

We also pray for the abusers, men and women. Heavenly Father, we ask that You will lead them to Your word so that they can become transformed. Help them to reach out and get the counseling that is needed. Place Your word in their hearts so that they will have peace within themselves, and with their partners.

Lord we lift up to You unsaved mothers. We pray that their hearts will be opened to surrender their lives to You, to call upon You for healing, deliverance and restoration in You Lord.

Lord, remember the mothers who are feeling the impact of a financial crisis at this time during the influx of COVID-19. You are a very present help in times of trouble, and You are more than enough. You are able to make every favour and earthly blessing come in abundance. Lord, please supply needs according to Your riches in glory by Christ Jesus. Many mothers are trying to create a balance between work and managing children at home. We pray Lord, that You will grant them peace, favour, provision, wisdom, compassion and strength at this time.

Lord we pray that You will protect our families and country from criminal acts of every kind, and help us to be good keepers of our brothers and sisters.

Lord we lift up the local and world leaders who are mothers. Also, the wives of local and world leaders who are mothers. We pray that the role they play will not go unnoticed but that others will help them to feel that they are of value.

Lord, we thank You that You care about every big or small thing that concerns us. These uncertain days and being under quarantine tempts us to assume the worst for our loved ones.  Help us as mothers to not let it overwhelm our spirit. Grant us Your peace and true wisdom. Help us as mothers to offer prayers and support to others in need, to reach out to You as our hope.

Lord, we thank You that You are our source of spiritual and physical strength. We appreciate You as our Lord, God, and Saviour, our Shield, our Glory and the Lifter up of our heads.

As we cry out to You Lord, we lay down everything at Your feet; every burden, every care. Lord we acknowledge that Your ways are higher than our ways, and Your thoughts are higher than our thoughts. Help us to wait on, and trust You, in all that we think, say and do.

Lord, on Mother’s Day when we honour mothers, may we love and cherish the special women who have nurtured and who have prayed for our well-being. Father, grant peace and love to every mother this day. We pray that You will surround us with Your presence and protect us from the attacks of the enemy. May we know that we are loved by You Lord, not because of what we have accomplished but because You love us with an everlasting love.

Lord, give each mother a worshipful reverence of You, the Creator and Sustainer of life.  Proverbs 31: 30 says, “Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.”  May all mothers feel equipped to take on every challenge, every situation, every day, with courage and joy because they are empowered in the fear of You.

We pray and ask these things with thanksgiving
in the name of Jesus Christ.

Amen
