The Streams of Prayer for 21 October 2023, is a circular from Wycliffe Global Alliance. Wycliffe Caribbean makes this available.
October 22 – October 28, 2023
It is a privilege to engage in God’s mission through involvement in Bible translation, but it is a God-sized job. And prayer—by the church worldwide—is essential to carrying out this work effectively, through dependence on God’s power. Many Alliance organisations participate in the Prayer Stream through staff members who provide churches, organisations and individual ‘pray-ers’ with prayer resources and opportunities. Our current theme is Prayer and we will focus on praying for the strategies by which Alliance organisations engage in the Prayer Stream on behalf of those who do not yet have access to Scripture, as well as those involved in Bible translation movements.

Happy 40th Anniversary: Singapore
Praise God for Wycliffe Singapore’s 40th-anniversary celebration on 7 October at Bartley Christian Church which was well-attended by partners and supporters. Thank the Lord for the organising team that helped in all the logistical preparations, the programme and the gifts to all attendees—a 2024 calendar and a book written by one of the staff. Pray that the celebration programme, the messages, and the book will encourage and spur the attendees to participate in or continue supporting Bible translation missions. Ask for the Lord’s anointing and guidance for the Wycliffe Singapore leaders and teams as they keep serving the Lord with joy and humility.
God answers prayer: Switzerland
A year ago, Wycliffe Switzerland was looking for a new finance director. The previous one was leaving at the end of the year. As the date neared, Wycliffe Switzerland sent the prayer request to many people and spoke about it at the World Day of Prayer for Bible Translation in November, to which friends and supporters were also invited. Just two weeks before the end of the year, God provided a new finance director, who was able to begin on 1 January! About a year ago as well, Wycliffe Switzerland had begun looking for a new member in the projects department, though this need was less urgent. After staff prayed for a year, a suitable person was found, who started this September. The timing was perfect because this new staff member started at the same time as a new director of the projects department. Because half of the department was new, it was perfect timing to restructure. God takes care of his children and answers prayers!
Need for prayer advocacy coordinator: Asia
The Alliance prayer team advocates for and encourages prayer for Bible translation around the world on behalf of Alliance organisations. A vacancy occurred at the end of September in the prayer advocacy coordinator role for the Asia area when the staff member serving in that role left to take another assignment. Ask the Lord for his wisdom for the prayer team and the Asia-Pacific area leaders as they work together on how best to take care of the responsibilities for this role. Thank the Lord that in the interim, various staff members have taken up additional responsibilities to cover for this gap. Ask the Lord for strength and stamina for each one. Pray for the Lord to provide the person with the needed skill set and knowledge and a heart of prayer to take up this vital role.
God answers prayers: Ethiopia
Praise God that weekly prayer meetings are held at the office of Wycliffe Ethiopia from 9 to 10:30 a.m. every Monday. This is a time of effective prayer, worship and sharing of the Word of God. Prayer requests are shared, praise reports are presented and updates on what God is doing in the field are given. God is faithful for having answered prayers and the work of Bible translation in Ethiopia has not stopped despite the extreme challenges that translators face in the field. Thank God that during the conflict in northern Ethiopia, he provided safe passage for some Bible translators and brought them safely to Addis Ababa to continue their work. Praise him for providing and for being so gracious. Continue to pray for peace and stability in Ethiopia, so that the translation of God’s Word into the languages of Ethiopia and bordering countries can continue.
Prayer coordinator Mellisa Wayne: Papua New Guinea
Mellisa Wayne began serving as prayer coordinator for the Papua New Guinea Bible Translation Association (PNGBTA) in July. Mellisa wrote, “Prayer has always been part of my life growing up. My mother would always take my small sister and me to the women’s all-night prayer meeting at church. It was a beautiful sound listening to the mothers praying. I have experienced the power of prayer in my life. I believe God does amazing things when we pray”. Mellisa is also the executive assistant to the director, a role she would like to pass on to someone else. Pray for the person with the knowledge and skill set needed to relieve Mellisa from the executive assistant responsibilities so that she can focus on coordinating and advocating prayer for PNGBTA. Ask the Lord to give her strength for each day and joy in her service.
Strategies to increase prayer: Australia
In order to encourage the church in Australia to pray for those without God’s Word, the Wycliffe Bible Translators Australia (WBTA) prayer team has five specific strategies:
- Asking the Lord to grow the prayerfulness of the churches in Australia.
- Collaborating with other organisations that share their heart for prayer.
- Strengthening connections with the local churches and other prayer initiatives.
- Encouraging WBTA personnel to invest in the prayer life of their partner churches by participating in these churches’ online prayer gatherings.
- Strengthening the core prayer group initiative for each WBTA staff member by praying regularly with a small group of faithful intercessors.
Praise the Lord for these strategies. Pray for the prayer team as they seek to encourage and advocate prayer for Bible translation and its core activities with their personnel and the church in Australia.
Prayers for the nations: Czech Republic
Staff members at Wycliffe Czech Republic have developed a prayer guide, which is available to buy as a book. The same information is released weekly for no cost on their website and social media. For each week of the year, they present a nation to pray for. Each nation is larger than the Czech Republic—which has a population of greater than 10 million people—but with less than 5 percent of the population Christian. In some situations, there are no known Christians. Often Christianity is forbidden by the government in these countries. The guide gives general information about how people live, notable characteristics and the challenges that they face. It also suggests ways to pray. Ask God to help the staff at Wycliffe Czech Republic to find creative ways to promote this resource. Pray that those who subscribe will faithfully pray and that as a result passion for the mission of God will grow.
