Community and Friendship
Our current theme for Streams of Prayer is Community and Friendship. “Community is the basis for the existence of the Alliance. …We affirm each other for who we are and not for what we contribute or for the quantity of the contribution. Our primary goal is to glorify God together.” (From The Wycliffe Global Alliance in Community.)
“Collaboration can be ‘doing together’ or ‘being together’ and also both,” says Dr Paul Kimbi, Alliance Consultant for Bible Translation Programmes. “Being precedes doing. It is necessary to spend time building friendship, building togetherness, on the basis of our values before we start doing things together. We should not ever be in a rush to start doing things together when we have not built trustworthy relationships. God calls us primarily to be a community of his people before he expects us to live out our call.”
Although each Alliance organisation has its own leadership, board and staff, all of us seek to work interdependently and we value the Alliance community for friendship, partnership, spiritual encouragement and other practical forms of mutual support.

Leadership Enrichment program: Europe
The Europe area of the Wycliffe Global Alliance is offering a Leadership Enrichment program, especially for Alliance Organisation (AO) leaders in Europe. Twenty-two leaders have registered for this program, which is held virtually once a month for two years. This program facilitates growth, providing a place for leaders to learn together as a community. It fosters networking, unity and collaboration within today’s global and complex Bible translation movements and provides a support community for people in leadership. Ultimately, investing in AO leaders leads to stronger global Bible translation movements. Please pray that this program results in well-equipped leaders and strengthened community and collaboration.
Celebration and church dedication in community: Peru
Jenner and Rosalba Valdivia, missionaries in Bible translation serving in Peru, participated in the dedication of La Playa Peregrinos’ Church in Incahuasi, Peru on 30 November and 1 December. For some time, the church has been reconstructing its building. Churches from various villages came together to celebrate. The host church provided food for all guests and visitors. The celebration began with a time of praise followed by a time of Bible reading, prayer and preaching from God’s Word in Quechua. There was also a time for each visiting church to share praises, called a ‘lip offering for God’. It was an opportunity to meet believers who come from far away. Some travelled two hours by motorcycle, others travelled two hours on foot. To God be the glory and honour for the growth and strengthening of the Quechua church.
Training prospective translation facilitators: Indonesia
Pray for Kartidaya Indonesia as they conduct Pre-Field Training (20 January to 14 February). Praise God for the commitment of the 24 participants sent by churches and partner organizations, and for the dedication of the committee who have prepared this training. Please pray that:
- Each participant will have strength and good health, and understand the material well so they can become impactful facilitators in Bible translation ministry.
- The trainers will have the wisdom and the ability to deliver the material in an effective and relevant way. That each will be an inspiration and role model for the participants in terms of service and commitment.
- God will facilitate the smooth operation of every technical and logistical aspect of the training.
- The field training in the clusters will be a valuable experience for the participants to apply what they have learned, and that God will help each one as they work with the team and community during the training.
- This training will produce competent and dedicated translation facilitators to expand God’s mission. And that Kartidaya’s collaboration with churches, partner organizations, and participants will continue to produce sustainable and fruitful service.
Productive partnership: Solomon Islands, Global
In partnerships we are God’s fellow workers (1 Corinthians 3:9). The International Decade of Indigenous Languages (IDIL) is an initiative launched by the United Nations with a mission to raise awareness about indigenous language preservation, revitalization and promotion. Pray for the IDIL event on 21 February, International Mother Language Day, in the Solomon Islands that is being organized by partners. Ask God to bring unity, focus and productivity to the collaborative planning with event host Solomon Island National University. Pray that the event will glorify God, encourage participants and highlight the value of indigenous languages, accomplishing his purposes through every detail of the program.
Reconciliation leads to friendship: Central Africa
The gospel message of reconciliation in Christ turned things around for language communities in Central Africa. Pray for the lasting impact of a recent reconciliation seminar among teenagers from four language communities. Give thanks for the 300 resulting decisions to follow Christ. Remember these young people as they begin their discipleship journey and pray for transformed lives and communities. Pray for healing and unity to break the cycle of tribal wars, fostering lasting friendship and peace among these communities spreading across the region.
Psalms That Sing pilot project engages communities: Africa
A three-year pilot project of the Psalms That Sing approach to translating Psalms was completed in December, leaving six communities with vibrant versions of 50-60 psalms each. Gifted musicians, songwriters and oral poets came together in each community to participate. The psalms have been performed, recorded (video and audio) and transcribed. A team of consultants from Wycliffe South Africa, Wycliffe UK, Wycliffe New Zealand, SIL International, Seed Company and SIM collaborated to provide guidance for the creative teams. Many people have become excited about these new Scripture songs in their languages. Pray that the Holy Spirit will touch hearts through God’s Word as it is heard and sung in these language communities: the Kom of Cameroon, Cokwe in Angola, Kaaps in South Africa, Wantu in Malawi, and Meetto and Koti in Mozambique. Pray that they will one day have the entire collection of the Psalms in their languages in formats that help them to worship, lament and connect more intimately with the Lord.
Mentoring one another: Central Africa
“As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” (Proverbs 27:17 NIV) Praise God for meaningful collaboration and strong mentoring within the finance department of an SIL entity in Central Africa. It is inspiring to witness the close cooperation happening in this service team. Ask for wisdom and guidance as team members grow in their understanding of new systems and work toward meeting important deadlines. May this partnership be marked by mutual encouragement, effective communication and steady progress in all tasks.
