Training
Many people with various areas of expertise are needed to translate the Bible in a clear, accurate and natural way. Training in Bible translation roles is therefore one of the seven Alliance Participation Streams. The skills are so important that many Alliance organisations regularly offer courses or training workshops, often collaborating with other organisations.
We will pray for those who are teaching, the students, and the organisations and institutions hosting these training programmes. We will ask God to provide instructors, administrative staff, finances, materials and equipment. Pray also for unity of purpose, excellent teaching and energy for learning, all of which result in well-equipped staff to serve in Bible translation movements. Pray too, that God will use these times of training to prepare them not only with more than technical skills, but also with spiritual and collaborative skills.

Success in academic and other trainings: Ethiopia
Praise God for the success achieved in formal academic and other training received by Wycliffe Ethiopia staff and those they work with. Two Wycliffe Ethiopia staff members completed advanced degrees. Mengistu Dilbo completed the Master of Arts in Translation of Scripture, and consultant Alemu Zegeye completed the Doctor of Ministry in Translation. Thank God for sustaining them, and may these competences give him all the glory as they are applied in service to language communities. Other workshops, like trauma healing and Bible storytelling, are going well. Pray for the upcoming advisors’ training, which will be held for four weeks, from 4-29 August. Pray also for the remaining Scripture engagement workshops planned for the year.
National Bible translation and Scripture use roundtables: Americas

The second orientation for facilitators of the Americas Mesa Bible translation roundtables will be held in Bogotá, Colombia, from 4-8 August, with the participation of 60 representatives from 15 national roundtables, as well as several guests. The orientation will address: the Mesa culture and the journey of developing the roundtables in the Bible translation movement; how roundtable participants can continue to grow deeper together in unity and community; and how they can deepen collaboration with God, with each other and with others. Pray for all who lead and attend this second orientation, which seeks to:
- Empower roundtable facilitators to develop practical ways of collaboration that will enable them to meet challenges, address needs and advance projects in Scripture translation and use.
- Strengthen each facilitation team’s understanding of and commitment to the Mesa purpose and culture in the Bible translation movement.
- Support the roundtables in creating or improving systems for collecting and updating data useful for informed and contextualized decision-making under local leadership.
Engaging young people for Bible translation: Czech Republic
In July, representatives from Wycliffe Czech Republic participated in Xcamp Evangelism Week. This provides an annual opportunity to promote missions and particularly Bible translation. This year, Wycliffe Czech Republic staff hosted an evening programme about mission work in Papua New Guinea. A Wycliffe Czech Republic member who serves in Papua New Guinea talked about what God is doing through Bible translation. Thank God for all the young people who attended and had the chance to hear about Scripture translation. Pray that seeds planted through this event will inspire people to get involved.
Many training opportunities: Bangladesh
Connections Bangladesh is engaging in a fruitful season of training and mobilisation. Pray for staff and volunteers to serve well with unity, wisdom and joy during this year’s offerings, which include:
- A Business as Mission training was held in July to help people explore faith-based entrepreneurship. Pray that participants will be able to apply what they learned and bear long-term fruit.
- A two-day Mission Consultation in August focusing on effective practices for missions in Bangladesh. Pray that God will bring the participants he has chosen to come and that it will be a meaningful time for all.
- A Kairos Course in October at a Bible college for young people to experience Christ’s love and be given tools to realise their God-given potential. Pray for the students and the facilitators as they prepare, and that they will be able to engage deeply.
- A six-month Internship Program is being launched in August to develop next-generation missional leaders. Pray that those who participate will grow both spiritually and practically.

Local Hebrew courses, typesetting training: South Africa
Praise God for the two training hubs being developed by Wycliffe South Africa. One is located in Nampula, Mozambique and the other in Johannesburg, South Africa. Thank God for the Hebrew course that has started for Portuguese-speaking mother-tongue translators and exegetes through the Whole Word Institute. An English-speaking cohort will start Hebrew training in November. Pray for this initiative to equip Bible translation workers in a biblical language for Old Testament translation. Ask God to give insight to the facilitators and the participants. Pray also for a plan made with SIL Global Publishing Services to train Scripture typesetters. Ask God to provide the needed resources for these training programmes. Praise him for these training opportunities.
Training that invests in others: Singapore

Wycliffe Singapore has a holistic view of training, investing spiritually and practically in the people and communities they serve with and live among. Praise God for the following:
- Wycliffe Singapore ran a workshop on 12 July for the general Christian public. Its focus was cross-cultural communications to help participants become aware and more skilled in knowing how to cross cultural hurdles as they share Christ. Praise God for this opportunity to serve the church in Singapore. Pray for the participants to carry this knowledge into their daily lives and use it for God’s glory. May the Lord also lead some to consider cross-cultural ministry.
- Pray for interns and volunteers who join Wycliffe Singapore, that as they serve alongside and learn from experienced staff, they will develop not just skills but a lifelong servant attitude in whatever ministry or work God might lead them to.
- Pray for the people who are being trained in the Arts in the Trauma Healing process to grow in their knowledge, skills and sensitivity to the Lord as they minister to their healing groups.
Language and culture acquisition training: Germany, Switzerland, Austria
From 14 July to 23 August, Wycliffe Germany hosts language and culture acquisition courses for students interested in serving with (or in the application process with) Wycliffe Germany, Wycliffe Switzerland or Wycliffe Austria. This is an exciting but also very strenuous time for staff and students alike. The staff take time out of their regular assignments to teach for 1, 2 or 4 weeks at a time.
- Praise God for the interest and engagement of the students and teachers, and for the facilities to host these courses at the Wycliffe Germany centre.
Pray for a successor to lead the summer programme and for guidance on how to develop this small set of training courses in future years.
