Church

As an Alliance, we believe that the purpose of the local church is to glorify God through participation in his mission: drawing people to Christ and making disciples. All who are part of the Alliance have the opportunity to serve the church and complement its ministry as we collaborate in Bible translation movements. (See Statements regarding Wycliffe Global Alliance’s relationship with the church.)

We also seek to listen to and learn from churches worldwide in order to build strong relationships for mutual encouragement and equipping. Together, we seek to encourage the meaningful, unique and complementary roles in God’s mission that he leads each church and organisation to fulfil. Join us as we pray for Alliance organisations engaged in the Church Participation Stream and for the worldwide church as it participates in Bible translation movements.

Engaging the church through prayer communities: Switzerland

Wycliffe Switzerland aims to give the church in Switzerland the opportunity to engage in the Bible translation ministry through prayer. This is why Wycliffe Switzerland has prepared prayer letters for 31 different Bibleless people groups. Over the years, many Swiss Christians have “adopted” a Bibleless people group in prayer. Wycliffe Switzerland’s ultimate goal is for intercessors to form a community, meeting regularly to pray together. Coming together to pray is a powerful way the church can contribute to Bible translation, as Jesus promised that where two or three meet as his followers, he is there among them. So far, nine prayer communities have been started. Pray for more intercessors to enthusiastically join or start a community, and for more local churches to “adopt” a people group. Pray also for wisdom for the Wycliffe staff who are trying to encourage people to begin new prayer communities.

Reconciliation and unity among two church denominations: Paraguay

In the Ñandeva language group in Paraguay, two denominations have carried the gospel for more than 40 years, preaching mostly in the Guarani language. The Ñandeva people never imagined that one day they could have the Word of God in their own language. However, when LETRA Paraguay proposed a project to translate the New Testament into Ñandeva, a dream was born in them. One of the great blessings of this process was the reconciliation and unity between the two denominations, who decided to work together to make this dream a reality. After eight years of hard work, the New Testament was completed. Many cried as they received the Bible in their own language. Until then, they had been accustomed to reading it in Guarani, but without fully understanding it. Now, the translation of the Old Testament is underway. Praise God for his faithfulness in providing for this translation and for the unity it has brought among Ñandeva Christians. Pray that the translated Ñandeva Scriptures will draw to Christ those who have not yet believed and that the Ñandeva church will be strengthened in faith so that more leaders will rise up and preach in their own language.

Prayers for additional church collaboration: Norway

Wycliffe Norway asks for prayer for ongoing collaboration with national Christian organisations and denominations such as The Teachers Mission (LMF), Normisjon and Oslo Vineyard. Pray that they will make connections with even more churches and organisations and that such partnerships will be strengthened.

Church finds creative ways to engage congregation in Bible translation: USA

In 2024, the pastor and leaders of a small church in Littleton, Colorado, found creative ways to build excitement about Bible translation in their congregation. They shared videos and stories about why Bible translation is so important and they taught on missions from the book of Matthew. The whole church designated its mission giving for that period to Bible translation. In the end, this small church of 50 people gave a total of $10,000. Together as a church, they got to choose which projects the donations would benefit. Even kids got involved. On Easter, the church held a traditional egg hunt for the kids. Ten of the plastic eggs contained a chocolate lamb, and the kids who found those eggs got to help choose one of the language communities that would benefit from the church’s gifts. One boy, from a family that did not attend church, found a lamb, and it provided an opportunity to share the gospel with his family. As they looked through the Wycliffe USA website, they learned about why God’s Word matters to everyone. Praise God for the excitement about Bible translation that grew in this church, and for the creative ways they were able to get people of all ages involved. Pray for God’s blessing on these gifts as they help provide for the translation of His Word into several languages, including Ukrainian Sign Language.

Collaboration with churches as key to success: Philippines

Wycliffe Philippines sees its collaboration with churches in various translation projects as the key to success, sustainability and impact. Please pray for:

• Stronger church advocacy for translation projects and greater involvement in planning and coordinating strategies to speed up the work without sacrificing accuracy.
• God to break down spiritual strongholds that resist the spread of His Word.
• Leaders elected in the national and local elections on 12 May to be supportive of Bible translation projects.
• Church member involvement as voice actors in recording translated portions.
• Leaders and members from 36 churches who attended the Tribal Christian Ministries of the Kalanguya. Pray for their involvement in Bible translation.
• Stakeholders of translation projects. Pray for healing of sick members, safe travels, provision of needs and comfort for bereaved families.

A powerful and meaningful partnership with the church: Ethiopia

Wycliffe Ethiopia has good relationships with various organisations and local churches that are deeply spiritual, and prayer is the foundation of all they do. Thank God that their partnership with local churches is powerful and meaningful. Apart from translating Scripture, Wycliffe Ethiopia is actively involved in responding to the needs of the church by bringing support in various ways. Regular church engagement through weekly and monthly programs is intentionally rooted in the communities where Bible translation projects are being implemented. There is a close connection with local churches that helps Wycliffe Ethiopia receive their updates and pray for them consistently. Pray for the service of Wycliffe Ethiopia toward churches in remote areas, where trained pastors and evangelists are limited or even absent. Thank God that through the Scripture engagement department, church leaders, pastors, Sunday school teachers, and women’s ministry leaders have been equipped to grow in their roles.
