Bible Translation Programmes
Wycliffe Global Alliance serves Bible translation movements because we long for language communities to encounter God through His Word. One of the Alliance’s core values is “trusting God to transform lives through His Word translated into the languages and cultures of the world’s peoples”.
We will pray for Bible translation efforts around the world and specific ways that Alliance organisations participate in the Bible Translation Programmes participation stream. We will also celebrate lives changed through Scripture and pray that many more communities will be powerfully impacted as they encounter God through the Bible translated into the languages they understand best.

Sign language translation involvement: Switzerland
Wycliffe Switzerland partners with a Christian organisation for the Deaf in developing Biblical terms in Swiss German Sign Language and putting them together in an online Bible lexicon. They are working on a new website, which will be more user-friendly for smartphone users. Thank God for good progress so far. Pray that the new website will be widely used by the Deaf in Switzerland, and that it will help Deaf Christians grow in their faith and communicate their faith more easily with other Deaf people.
Community testing of Jamaican 1 Samuel: Caribbean
Thank God for the opportunity that the Wycliffe Caribbean Jamaican translation team had to test the draft of 1 Samuel with a diverse group of community members. In July, a diverse group of teens, youth and adults met to read and talk about this new book translated into Jamaican Creole. The group included new people who were just learning Jamaican, as well as some who were more proficient. All got the opportunity to read and give their responses to this newly translated book. It was a joy to see the group members so engaged with God’s Word that they lost track of time. A second group met the following week online. This was a group of youths more proficient with reading the language, but no less engaged. They gave helpful feedback for the translators. Praise God that the groups were so engaged with God’s Word. Pray that his Word will reach more people in the community.
Prayer for translation teams and communities: Philippines
Wycliffe Philippines asks for praise and prayer for the following projects listed by region:
- Palanan-Agta team completed the review of 1 & 2 Kings in seven days. Pray for an October consultant check.
- Praise for progress in the Casiguran-Dumagat and Southern Kalanguya consultant checks.
- Praise God for the good reception of a translation awareness workshop at the Freedom of Praise Church in Sama Samalnonon and Wawaanon area. Pray for guidance for the team in checking their translation.
- Praise God for funding for the Yogad project. Pray for upcoming checks of drafts and Scripture engagement activities. Pray for the health and strength of the older Isinay translators and for wisdom for Iwak translators.
- Thank God for a successful check of Bago drafts in September. Pray that community leaders will continue to welcome and support the project.
Praise God for increased interest in the Scriptures through these projects. Pray for protection on each team and community transformation.
New Testament celebrated, Old Testament in progress: Sudan, Germany
The Fur community in Juba (South Sudan) celebrated the arrival of the printed New Testament in their language 30 August. What a joy! Praise God for this great gift at a time of extreme challenges and immense suffering through famine and war. Up until that day, they had used a pseudonym name for the language. But now they want everyone to know of the existence of this book bearing the title “The Word of God”, regardless of personal risk. Many were not able to travel to South Sudan, so the video of the celebration was posted on Facebook and YouTube. Pray that many Fur people hear about it and that many learn to read their language in order to read the New Testament and find strength and hope. The translation of the Old Testament is in progress. Pray for protection and wisdom for the translation team as they continue work.
Local churches deeply involved: Democratic Republic of Congo
ACOTBA-SUBO was founded in 2001 in Gemena in the province of Sud-Ubangi in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Founded and supported in its Bible translation programmes by two Protestant churches and two Catholic dioceses, ACOTBA-SUBO already has produced two Bibles — in Ngbaka and Mbandja — and four New Testaments — in Lobala, Pagabete, Mono and Ngbandi Sud. Thank God for the availability of His Word in these languages. Pray that the church will continue to make good use of it for the transformation of lives. Pray for the smooth continuation of the New Testament translation programmes in the Gobu, Togbo, Ngbundu, Yakpa, North and South Ngombe, Fulu and Budja communities. Pray for the impact of oral Bible storytelling that has been done in 11 languages. Thank God that some of these storytellers have become church leaders after completing theology studies.
Gospels translation project: Venezuela
In September, Capacitación Lingüística Antropológica y Aalfabetización Nativa Venezuela Venezuela (CLAN) began a Gospels translation project in six languages: Warao, Kari´ña, Yukpa, Ñeengatu, Curripaco and Dhe’Cwana. Pray for:
- Wisdom for each step and guidance of the Holy Spirit;
- Wisdom for training CLAN translators, facilitators, exegetes, consultants and Paratext technicians;
- Guidance and protection during CLAN’s visits to the different groups and their leaders;
- Provision and good health for CLAN members and their families;
- Additional people to get involved in administration and literacy as well as more workers, sent by their churches, to serve in groups where translation and evangelism are needed;
- Additional staff to share the vision for translation with churches, so that they can join in financial support.
Sign language translation progress: Romania
Praise God for the progress made in translating the Bible into Romanian Sign Language. Recently, the translation team met with a consultant near Brașov, central Romania, to review Matthew chapters 19-24. They tested the translated Scriptures with Deaf individuals from the Brașov area. The team is also preparing to attend the annual European Deaf Christian Bible Translation Conference, organised by the European Deaf Christian Alliance (EDCA), which will take place in France this year.
- Praise the Lord that all team members will be able to attend the week-long conference in November, and pray his blessing on those who contributed gifts to cover costs.
- Pray that these six chapters of Matthew can soon be distributed within the Deaf community in Romania and that people’s lives will be transformed.
- The team is working on translating Ruth. Pray for the guidance of the Holy Spirit and for the protection for each team member.
