Global Gathering

Thank you for praying with us for the Global Gathering preparations. The event starts this week. Praise God that this first Global Gathering in eight years is finally coming to fruition! Your prayers are especially needed this week as Alliance leaders, board members and partners who serve in global Bible translation movements come together, many for the first time. The theme is “Growing Together”. Delegates look forward with anticipation to a fresh encounter with God as they converge in Johannesburg, South Africa. Pray for openness to hear God’s voice, freedom to be led by his Spirit and eagerness to learn from each other.

Thank God for the staff team at the hotel as they serve us through the Global Gathering. Pray that God strengthens them as they prepare for the event. Ask God for clear communication between the staff team for the Gathering and the staff team at the hotel, and pray especially for Lauren who will act as the liaison. Pray that the hotel will be blessed by the Alliance. May the staff encounter love, acceptance and honour as they interact with staff and participants of the Gathering.

Monday

The rest of the staff team for the Global Gathering will arrive in South Africa by the morning of 29 October in time for an afternoon team briefing. Pray that each arrives safely. Ask God to prepare the hearts of the team to serve in the coming days. Ask for creativity, energy and enthusiasm as they ready themselves for the event to come. Pray that each one will remain healthy and sleep well.

Tuesday

As the majority of people arrive, on 29-30 October, pray that they feel welcome, for smooth transfers from the airport to the hotel, that no one loses their bags, and that they can get into their rooms quickly. Pray for a sense of excited expectation, peace and joy for the coming week. The main meeting room will be set up on 30 October. Pray especially that all the tech will work well. Thank God for partners in South Africa who will help in many ways, especially the event management team at Rendzo and the staff of Wycliffe South Africa

Each day of the Global Gathering follows a theme which is a value of the Alliance. The theme for Day One (31 October) is Community. Ask God to help all involved in the Gathering to connect well with those they meet for the first time and to build friendships from the start. Pray especially for the participants who are not very comfortable speaking and listening in English. Pray that they will experience true community despite language barriers and be able to contribute to discussion groups. Pray that God will deepen existing relationships and that the fruit of our time together will be unity and great collaboration. Ask God to anoint Pastor Simon Mwangi of Nairobi who will lead the devotional times each day. Pray he will know the presence of God.

Thursday

The theme for Day Two (1 November) is Church. Ask God to speak to us as we seek to identify questions that arise around the topic “the church and Bible translation”. Pray for all those who are facilitating sessions during the Gathering. Sessions on Day Two will include regional gatherings and an opportunity for board representatives to meet together. Pray that members of boards can hear and learn from one another. Some sessions during the Gathering will be live-streamed so the whole Alliance can participate. Ask God to help the Communication team present the Gathering in ways that communicate clearly what is happening at the event as they compile daily email and video updates. Ask that God would speak clearly to all who are participating virtually and pray for protection on equipment and technology.

The theme for Day Three (2 November) is The Translated Word.  Pray especially for the interpretation team to continue to know God’s enabling and grace as they ensure all participants clearly understand what is being said. Pray also for the team of people who will spend time each day reflecting on what has been discussed and discerning what God is saying to us. Ask God to inspire the participants to think of innovative ways to work collaboratively in the coming phase of Bible translation movements. Many who are present at the Global Gathering carry varied and heavy responsibilities. Ask that each one, whether staff or participant, encounters God’s kindness and equipping throughout the event.

Saturday

The theme for Day Four (3 November) is The Glory of God. Those at the Gathering will be observing the Sabbath together. Pray that everyone learns more about stopping, resting, delighting and worshipping. Pray that God will be honoured and his people refreshed. Pray especially for those on the staff team, who will continue to work, that they will be energised and encouraged.
